• Dakota Zoo: North Dakota's largest zoo. Open Apr 22-Sept 30 from 10 am-8 pm. Special entertainment each Wednesday night from 7-9 pm in Jun, Jul and Aug. Admission is $4.50 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Train rides are $1 per person. 701-223-7543

• North Dakota Heritage Center: The center houses one of the largest collections of Plains Indian artifacts in the nation. Demonstrations are available by appointment. Self-guided tours Mon-Fri from 8am-5 pm, Sat from 9am-5pm, and Sundays form 11am-4pm. 612 E Blvd Ave, 701-328-2666
• Five Nations Art Depot: The historic Burlington Northern Railroad Depot on Main Street in Mandan features Native American arts and crafts and interpretive programs. Open daily, Mon-Sat, 10 am-7 pm, Sun 12-5 pm. Free admission, 1580 236th St NE, Sterling, ND 701-663-4663
• Camp Hancock: The site of a military camp dating back to 1872 was used to protect Northern Pacific railroad workers. Listed on National Register of Historic Places. Open May 16 to Sept 16, Wed-Sun, 1 to 5 pm. Admission is free. 101 E Main St, 701-328-2666
• Railroad Museum: Houses exhibits from the early 1900's with handmade models, photographs and uniforms are on display. A miniature train carries passengers on Sundays and holidays. Open daily 1-5 pm, Memorial Day to Labor Day. Free.102 37th St NW, Mandan, ND 701-663-9322
