Heading north on SH 1 from Christchurch turn off at Waipara onto SH 7 and you will arrive at Hanmer Springs - this a 90 minutes drive. Heading south from Kaikoura, you will on SH 1 and after about 10kms turn right onto SH 70 and stay on this SH 70 until it meets SH 7 - turn right and Hanmer Springs is 15 km further up SH 7. Hanmer Springs is 2 hours drive from Kaikoura and Whale Watching
